F.A.Q.

Ingredients

Why is Piccolo grain free?

Grains such as corn, wheat and barley have been linked with canine allergies, with symptoms ranging from upset stomach to itchy flaky coat. They are also significantly less digestible and have limited nutritional value when compared to meat. This is why you won’t find any in a pack of Piccolo.

By being grain free and by significantly reducing the carbohydrate content, Piccolo dog food has a much higher level of digestibility which means lower feeding amounts, reduced cost and a smaller stool volume.

Is Piccolo dog food hypoallergenic?

Yes - Hypoallergenic means that a food is less likely to cause an allergic reaction. The ingredients in Piccolo have been chosen with this in mind and we have avoided those known to most commonly cause an allergic reaction, such as wheat and dairy.

Does Piccolo contain any unhealthy artificial additives?

No. We believe there is no necessity in adding artificial additives to our foods when there are natural, healthier alternatives:

Preservatives

Piccolo products are preserved naturally with mixed tocopherols (vitamin E).

Flavourings

The high levels of palatability in Piccolo means that artificial flavourings are simply not required – Piccolo is a taste sensation for even the fussiest of dogs.

Colourings

Pets don’t care for fancy colours which would be added to a food only to make the product more interesting to the owner - there would be absolutely no benefit to your pet. So there are no colourings are added Piccolo.

What are meat and animal derivatives and does Piccolo contain any?

Meat and animal derivatives are commonly used in many pet foods and consist of animal by-products. These are commonly used as they are cheaper than single source meats. We believe that the meat used in pet foods should be named; that’s why you won’t find “meat and animal derivatives” on our labelling!

Why are there variances in the Piccolo kibble?

Piccolo is made with all natural ingredients in small batches. Therefore there are small variances in colour, shape and size although the kibble will still provide the same levels of taste and nutrition.

What are mixed tocopherols?

Tocopherols are a blend of vitamin E and are used to give Piccolo products a longer shelf life without the concerns of using artificial preservatives.

Feeding

Can I moisten Piccolo pet food?

We recommend that you feed Piccolo dry with plenty of fresh water available in a bowl close by. However you can add a little water which can help enhance the flavours for the fussiest of eaters or to help those with dental problems.

Do I need to add any other food to Piccolo?

No, all Piccolo products are complete and balanced which means they contain all the nutrition that your dog or cat requires.

Can I feed table scraps to my dog?

We don’t recommend it as these can lead to obesity and can upset your pet’s stomach. A dog’s digestive system is very different to ours and foods that we can easily digest could be potentially dangerous to a dog. Chocolate, for example, can be dangerous as it contains theobromine which is poisonous and can be fatal when consumed by dogs. Dogs have problems with the following foods: onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, dough, corn on the cob, cooked chicken bones, mushrooms, chocolate and beetroot.

Feeding Tips

  • Keep fresh drinking water available at all times
  • Keep water bowls clean
  • Store food in dry and cool conditions, sealing the bag up to keep fresh
  • Feed your pet at the same time every day
  • Avoid feeding your dog before travelling in the car as this can contribute towards car sickness

Lifestage / Suitability

Is Piccolo suitable for puppies?

With the exception of Piccolo Senior/Light which is specifically aimed at older dogs, all other varieties of Piccolo can be fed to puppies as the nutrient levels are more than sufficient for their every need. The protein and fat levels in Piccolo are much higher than those found in most carbohydrate packed adult dry dog foods, or even puppy foods!

The calcium and phosphorus levels and ratios of inclusion are also well suited to the development of puppies.

Are any of Piccolo products suitable for older dogs?

We’d recommend our Piccolo Light / Senior for both senior and overweight dogs. Older and overweight dogs are more prone to joint problems and Piccolo Light / Senior for Dogs contains a 3-combination joint health care compounds.

  • Glucosamine Sulphate assists the creation of new cartilage
  • Chondroitin Sulphate reduces enzymes which damage cartilage in joints
  • MSM helps reduce joint inflammation and is known for its pain reducing properties.
